About CADVAS

CADVAS aims to promote and foster interest in the study of archaeology in Corwen and the Dee Valley. The society runs a programme of events for its members, and to which the general public are also invited, (a small donation of £3.00 is requested from non-members  attending these events).

Our monthly talks usually take place in Carrog Village Hall.

Our intention is to research and record the rich archaeological heritage of the Dee Valley from the source of the Dee in Penllyn to the Vale of Llangollen. This remit includes the tributary valleys of the Dee and neighbouring areas.

Our members enjoy a full programme of events, from monthly lectures, to fieldwork, site visits, relevant archaeological training and community projects. CADVAS will also undertake and support community activities which have a bearing on this area’s archaeological heritage.

Membership of CADVAS is £12 per annum which covers ALL our activities, and includes personal injury insurance.

Join as an Active Member or as a Friend of CADVAS to support our endeavours.

Join us on Digs

Prior to the lockdown period CADVAS successfully excavated a previously unrecorded Bronze Age hillside cairn which yielded some interesting finds. (see images on the left)

CADVAS organises training activities which act as an introduction for our members and volunteers to learn first-hand from experienced and qualified archaeologists.

These usually take the form of supervised test-pit digs over three days, similar to the format of “Time Team”.

All ages are welcome; though youngsters under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

We make every effort to involve people of all abilities. If you are unsure whether you will be able to take part, please contact us to see how you can get involved.

Listen to Talks and Presentations

CADVAS has to date provided over eighty lectures in which visiting academics, archaeologists and local historians have shared their knowledge and experiences. These lectures take place monthly at the Village Hall in Carrog and always attract an appreciative audience. These talks are free for members but guest are also welcome for a £3 fee.

CADVAS members often attend meetings of neighbouring historical societies and in turn share their experiences with the group and those unfamiliar with the rich archaeological and historical heritage of our area. Members attend heritage fairs and community events with a pop-up stall, on behalf of CADVAS, showing images and objects of interest which we have acquired and discovered.

We also produce a newsletter which informs the public of future events and other CADVAS activities. Plus new for 2025 we run training sessions in relevant Archaeological skills and research. We have our own Geo Phys equipment and other surveying equipment that we orgnanise training on and will be hiring out our services this coming year – with thanks to DVSC and Lottery grant money.

Join us on guided walks and field trips.

CADVAS offers guided walks to members as well as other groups, societies and local youth organisations.

We can cater for all abilities whether experienced hill-walkers, or those who prefer a gentle amble, to and around a local historic sites. We also organise trips for members to various places of interest further afield.
