Situated halfway between the town of Corwen and the village of Cynwyd and set back off the B4401, Llangar church is a true Medieval gem, and well worth visiting (usually in tandem with the nearby Rug Chapel). Both are in the care of CADW and are only open at certain times of the year. (Please see CADW website for full details)
Llangar church closed its doors in 1856 and over a century was to lapse before a thorough restoration and archaeological investigation was undertaken. What we see today is a veritable time-capsule which can only be truly appreciated by an actual visit.
There is some conjecture amongst researchers and scholars as to certain time-lines, but don`t let that put you off from visiting what is a fine example of a Welsh parish church in which the last religious service took place nearly 170 years ago. CJ.
Directions: Follow A5 north-west towards B4401. 2km/1.2mls S. West of Corwen. Limited parking in Cynwyd lay-by on B4401. The church is a walk of 300m/ 330 yards off the B4401. Look for the brown sign for Eglwys Llangar Church and follow the footpath until you reach the churchyard.
