The heavily denuded defensive features at Gaerwen suggest a place of sporadic occupation located as it is on an exposed ridge just to the east of the highest point on Mynydd Mynyllod, namely, Y Foel (392m). An oval enclosure measuring roughly 68m x 80m with extensive views eastwards and especially towards the Berwyn Mts, it is still an important local landmark and popular with walkers.
It is located close to the route of the Ffordd Gam Elin, an ancient trackway, which runs North South across the Dee Valley and over the Berwyns in the direction of the Ceiriog and Tanat valleys. Another trackway, probably equally ancient, runs North east/South West just to the north of the Gaerwen and s known locally as Ffordd y Saeson which is said to bear witness to the westward advance of Saxon invaders in the aftermath of the Roman occupation. A nearby stream also bears the name Nant Rhyd y Saeson.
